The central government has replaced its top official in charge of Hong Kong and Macau affairs, it was announced today. Xia Baolong, vice-chairman of the CPPCC, takes over from Zhang Xiaoming as Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council.
Xinhua said Zhang Xiaoming had been reappointed as deputy director in charge of daily operations of the HKMAO.
The head of Macau’s Liaison Office of the Central Government, Fu Ziying, will also serve as a deputy director of the HKMAO, together with his Hong Kong counterpart, Luo Huining.
Xia Baolong was born and grew up in Tianjin, where he rose to the position of deputy mayor. Between 1999 and 2003 he studied political economics at Peking University, after which he was appointed as deputy party secretary of Zhejiang, serving under the secretary who was later to become President, Xi Jinping. He became the province’s party secretary in 2012, and was appointed to the CPPCC post in 2018.
